UPDATE: SPC Nicholas Peter DiMona III Killed in Army training accident 2019, Father Nicholas Peter DiMona II killed in Army accident 2004

SPC Nicholas Peter III, 20 hit by rounds from an M240 machine gun, died in that live fire training accident at the Donnelly Training Center in Alaska on March 30, 2019. 

MiIitary Times today gave an update, indicting the lack of oversight in the accident in which he died.
First of all, the exercise was rushed due to a late change of plans, creating lack of control.

“Radios were inhibited due to the cold weather, targets were not always well-marked, the roles of safety and training personnel were mixed, there was confusion among soldiers regarding the shifting and lifting of fires, and surface danger zones — the area a projectile could land or ricochet — were not sufficiently established,“ according to the Military Times report in full Here.

In 2019, The New Jersey Governor ordered the flag to fly at half staff in honor of his memory which summarizes his Army career: EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 65

United States Army Specialist (SPC) Nicholas P. DiMona III was a longtime resident of Medford Lakes; and
SPC DiMona joined the United States Army in July 2017, completed training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was most recently stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, which is in Anchorage, Alaska;
SPC DiMona was assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division;
In his time serving our country, SPC DiMona earned the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the parachutist badge; SPC DiMona tragically lost his life during a military training exercise on March 30, 2019, in Alaska;

in a tragic twist of fate, 15 years earlier, when SPC Nicholas Peter III was five, his father was killed in a similar accident.

Chief Warrant Officer II, age 32, died June 22, 2004. CW2 DiMona enlisted in the United States Army in June of 1990.
In February 1999, he celebrated the birth of his son, Nicholas P. DiMona III. In February 2000, CW2 DiMona began the Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker, AL. After graduating and earning the rank of WO1, Mr. DiMona began Rotary Wing Flight Training at which he excelled. Upon completion of flight training, CW2 DiMona was qualified to fly the TH-67 Bell Jet Ranger, the OH-58 A/C Kiowa, and the AH-64D Longbow Apache.
After flight school, CW2 DiMona was assigned to 1-3
Aviation Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, GA in November 2001.
In January 2002, he deployed with 1-3 AVN Regiment to spearhead the successful unit efforts during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He flew over 47 combat hours and earned the Army Air Medal for his services and bravery. Upon returning from Iraq, CW2 DiMona earned the title of Pilot in Command, thereby proving his superior abilities as an aviator and professional officer. Run For The Fallen

OBID DiMONA, SPC Nicholas Peter III, died suddenly on March 30, 2019, of Medford Lakes NJ. Age 20. Nick was proudly serving his country in the US ARMY at the time of his death. He was fulfilling his dream of being in the ARMY which he began as a little boy. Nick was always giving of himself; he loved working and volunteering at YMCA of the Pines for many years. Most of all, Nick loved and was extremely close to his family. They traveled and lived a very full life together and those memories are priceless. Nicholas is the dearly loved son of Melissa DiMona (nee Saunders) and the late Nicholas Peter DiMona II and the loving brother of Gianna DiMona. He is the beloved stepson of Joseph Carabasi, grandson of Nicholas P. DiMona (Dolores Obermeier) and Elma DiMona (Susan Ebbitt) and Betty Saunders and the late Raymond Saunders. He is dearly loved and will be deeply missed by his aunts, uncles, cousins, family members and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Monday from 6-9pm at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church, 40 Jackson Road Medford NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30am at the church. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
