NYPD Police Commissioner: 600 Members Undercover Agents to be disbanded
NYPD Police Commissioner Shea announced that he will be disbanding NYPD undercover police force of 600 members:
NYPD Commissioner Dermot F. Shea said his department will move toward more high tech, intelligence-based policing and away from “brute force,” according to NPR.
“Make no mistake,” Shea said. “This is a seismic shift in the culture of how the N.Y.P.D. polices this great city. It will be felt immediately in the communities that we protect.”
“This is a policy shift coming from me personally,” he said. “It’s a big move. I would consider this in the same realm as (moving away) from stop, question and frisk. It’s time to move forward and change how we police in this city. We can do it with brains, with guile, and not with brute force,” NY Daily News reported
The Commissioner suggested moving the undercover agents into other sections of the NYPD.
But the crime statistics in the city are grim:
38 homicides, a 25% increase were reported in the preceding four weeks, compared to 19 in the same period a year ago, NYPD figures show.
Shootings also increased by 24.3% so far for the year.
Burglaries have climbed citywide by 47% for the year so far, with 6,595 incidents versus 4,480 in the same period in 2019, NY Daily News quoted NYPD statistics.
The Commissioner expressed regard for the regular NYPD force in a tweet: Everyday heroes. One New York City. One America. “It is in our heart and it is in our soul – to sacrifice, to serve, to fight … for you.”
” Responding officers quickly disarmed & arrested the man, taking one more gun off NYC streets. Outstanding work by these officers, & another example of the great work being done every day,” he said in another NYPD tweet that he posted on his official twitter Page:
