In an interview aired Wednesday, President Joe Biden told BET News’ Ed Gordon that if there was “some medical condition that emerged,” he would consider stepping out of the presidential race.
Wednesday afternoon, Biden tested positive for COVID-19.
He was tested after experiencing “upper respiratory symptoms” after his first event on the campaign trail in Las Vegas while trying to garner support from Latino voters.
All campaign events have been put on pause while he “self-isolates” at his beach house in Delaware. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Biden will carry out “all of his duties fully during that time.”
The CDC no longer recommends a 5-day isolation period after testing positive for COVID. Guidelines for COVID are now the same as those for any other respiratory virus, for which the CDC recommends avoiding contact with others until 24 hours after symptoms begin to abate.
Biden has faced mounting concerns over his physical and mental fitness for the presidency from both Republicans and Democrats, including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
On X, Biden posted, “I’m sick,” and then in a separate tweet said, “of Elon Musk and his rich buddies trying to buy this election. And if you agree, pitch in here” with a donation link. Many Democrats blasted the tweets as “pathetic,” highlighting Biden’s deepening isolation in the party.
