Newcastle United have confirmed that Tottenham’s former head of recruitment Paul Mitchell has now taken over as the club’s new sporting director.

Newcastle announce Paul Mitchell

Mitchell joined Tottenham as a head of scouting from Southampton, following Mauricio Pochettino’s move from St. Mary’s to the North London club, before becoming the Lilywhites’ head of recruitment.

The 42-year-old resigned from Spurs back in 2016 (Guardian) and eventually joined the Red Bull Group in 2018, before serving as Monaco’s sporting director for the last four years.

There were some suggestions last year that Spurs could look to reappoint Mitchell as Fabio Paratici’s replacement (GiveMeSport) but that did not come to fruition, with the club eventually bringing Johan Lange through the door.

Some reports claimed earlier this year that the former Tottenham man was the favourite to take over as Man Utd’s sporting director (Ben Jacobs), but the Red Devils poached Dan Ashworth from Newcastle instead.

The Magpies in turn have now brought Mitchell through the door to fill the role that Ashworth has vacated at St James’ Park.

Mitchell told the club’s official website on his appointment: “It’s with immense pride that I accept the responsibility of being Newcastle United’s new sporting director.

“I’ve seen the recent growth and ambition of the club. This, plus the amazing fan base, made the decision to join an easy one. I can’t wait to get started and help continue the organisation’s growth and long-term competitiveness in all areas of elite football performance.”

Mitchell has always been one of the most sought-after operators in the game and it was only a matter of time before one of the big Premier League clubs poached him.
