According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are now closing in on a deal to sign Tottenham target Riccardo Calafiori, with last season’s Premier League runners-up ready to meet Bologna’s asking price for the centre-back.

Riccardo Calafiori is set to join Arsenal

The report says that although the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle United had all shown concrete interest in bringing Calafiori to the Premier League, it is Arsenal who are expected to do so.

The defender is said to have rejected the likes of the Lilywhites and the Blues as he felt that a move to those clubs would be a gamble.

Spurs currently already have Micky Van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin on their books.

Calafiori rejected Chelsea and Tottenham

Instead, the Italy international, who shone at the Euros, has allegedly agreed to personal terms with the Gunners on a five-year deal worth €4m per season and is expected to seal a move to the Emirates.

Although Arsenal have not reached a full agreement with Bologna, they are thought to be ready to match the Italian club’s asking price of €50m, with talks between all parties now said to be advancing.

Tottenham will seemingly have to look elsewhere for any centre-back reinforcement this summer.

Arsenal are a more attractive club to potential targets at this stage as they are way ahead of us in their project.

Calafiori might have also felt that his chances of being a regular starter at the Emirates could be higher, given that he would have to compete with Van de Ven, Romero and Dragusin at Spurs.
