Djed Spence is back at Tottenham Hotspur after a successful loan spell with Genoa last season, and while his future at Spurs remains in doubt, there is one big issue holding up any potential deal.

Genoa cannot afford Djed Spence

The right-back has failed to make an impact at Tottenham since he joined the Lilywhites back in 2022, and has spent most of his time since then out on loan at other clubs.

It’s looking highly likely Spence will be moved on again this summer, either permanently or for another loan deal, but Genoa are struggling to bring him back to Italy.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, the reason is simple. The Serie A side cannot afford him.

Apparently, the offer Genoa made of just under £4m earlier this summer was so heavily reduced from the £8.5m purchase option they had, because they would need to save money for the player’s wages.

It is thought Genoa would “return to the table” if Spence were to agree to a pay cut in order to join them.

Is a Spence revival on the cards?

There is no denying Spence is a talented player, but for some reason, he has failed to impress both Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglou.

That is, until now. Spence played a part in the 5-1 friendly win over Hearts on Wednesday evening, and even managed to get himself on the scoresheet to cap off a fine performance.

However, it remains to be seen whether he can force his way into Postecoglou’s plans for the season ahead.

Spurs We Opinion

I would really love to see Spence get his career back on track at Spurs, and that performance in the friendly was a really promising sign that he could do it. He’s obviously a top player, and we do need a right-back, so if it can work out, we have to try and make it happen.
