Tottenham confirm departure of midfielder on season-long loan
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the departure of one of the club’s promising young players on loan.
Loan deal confirmed for Matthew Craig
Tottenham have confirmed via their official site this evening that Matthew Craig has agreed a loan move to Barnsley for the 2024/25 campaign.
The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season with League Two outfit Doncaster Rovers, who narrowly missed out on promotion having lost to Crewe Alexandra in the play-offs.
He played a key part in Doncaster’s remarkable rise from the club being in 20th place when he joined, winning 14 and losing just once in 19 games to help them to a fifth-placed finish.
Craig made his Premier League debut for Tottenham on the final day of the 2022/23 season as a late substitute against Leeds United at Elland Road under the management of Ryan Mason.
The young midfielder will now link up with his new Barnsley team-mates at their pre-season training camp at Loughborough University this week.
Craig will spend the 2024/25 season at Barnsley
A statement on the official Spurs site read: “Matthew Craig has joined League One side Barnsley on loan for the 2024/25 season.
“A product of our Academy, Matthew made his Premier League debut for us on the final day of the 2022/23 season at Leeds United and spent the second half of last term on loan at Doncaster Rovers, where he made 20 appearances and helped them to reach the League Two play-offs.”
Meanwhile, Tottenham have this afternoon jetted off to Japan to start the Asia leg of their pre-season tour with a number of academy players included.
Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilon have been left behind, surplus to Ange Postecoglou’s requirements in order to ‘explore prospective transfer opportunities’.
