Tottenham signed a deal involving Cardoso

As has been well documented, Tottenham have secured a rather unusual agreement as part of their Giovani Lo Celso sale to Betis on transfer deadline day.

The North London club now have the option to sign Cardoso for around £25m, with the option only though to be valid for a two-week period in next summer’s transfer window (The Telegraph).

Some sources even suggested that if Ange Postecoglou’s men decide against activating it, they will automatically get a sell-on clause for the USA international (Football.London).

Some might view that as a very shrewd move by Tottenham, given the way the 22-year-old quickly established himself as Betis’ midfield general after breaking into the team last season, although the youngster has found himself out of the starting eleven at the start of this campaign.

Tottenham’s deal could spark a new form of transfer

Borson believes that this kind of deal is a sign of things to come, predicting that Premier League sides will get a lot more creative in the market over the coming years.

When asked about Tottenham’s agreement with Betis, he told Football Insider: “I think clubs are getting more and more creative with the deals. If you are selling to Betis, you know that you are probably not going to maximise your cash inflow from the deal.

“There are going to have to be other bits and pieces, be that sell-on clauses or other pieces like first options on other players you are potentially interested in. I think you will see more and more creativity around that when people are selling outside of England.

“Where it’s an English deal, I think you are going to see more deals where people are focused on the headline amount. But where clubs are not going to be able to pay huge headline amounts, then they are going to want some additional value within the deal and I’m sure people will get more and more creative around it.”

Time will tell if this proves to be a smart deal or not. Cardoso is undoubtedly talented but we do not know how he is going to develop and he has struggled to get into Manuel Pellegrini’s starting eleven so far this season.
