Postecoglou shouted at Lucas Bergvall twice during latest Spurs win, here’s why
Everyone associated with Tottenham Hotspur will have been buzzing with the win over Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, but Ange Postecoglou still found cause to get angry with Lucas Bergvall on two occasions during the game.
Bergvall needs to work on decision-making
In a short space of time, it has been immediately apparent just how special a player Lucas Bergvall is, and how much potential he has to grow in the future.
He’s slowly but surely making an impact at Tottenham since arriving at the club this summer, and was given some more game time at the weekend in the win over United.
In a 13-minute cameo, Bergvall looked assured in the middle of the park, but he did annoy his manager twice, with Postecoglou screaming across the pitch at the young Swedish star.
Now, according to a report from Football.London, the reason for Postecoglou‘s displeasure is down to the decisions Bergvall made when he had the ball at his feet.
The first time Postecoglou bellowed at the teenager was because he decided to take a shot from long distance rather than passing to the unmarked Mikey Moore who was in a better position. Bergvall’s shot went flying over the bar.
Later, Bergvall did pass the ball to Moore, but ignored a better option on the other side to play in two of his teammates on the other side.
Postecoglou was not happy, shouting at the youngster and clearly showing him where he thought the ball should have gone.
A tough week for Bergvall
Feeling the fury of Ange Postecoglou is not the only thing Bergvall has had to deal with in the last week. The young midfielder was crushed last Thursday evening when his Europa League debut was cut short due to tactical changes after Radu Dragusin’s red card in the seventh minute against Qarabag.
Bergvall made way for Destiny Udogie so that Postecoglou could maintain the shape of the back four, leaving the crestfallen Swede to watch from the sidelines for the rest of the game.
Bergvall will learn quickly
The great thing is that Bergvall is so young yet already has so much right with his game, that he can adapt to the demands of the Premier League fairly quickly and work on the areas he needs to under Postecoglou’s guidance.
I feel for him, as he’s had these two incidents this week, and was shouted at by Guglielmo Vicario earlier in the season, too. But, it’s all part of the learning curve, and he’s mature enough to deal with it all.
