Pundit says Spurs star is starting to remind him of Dennis Bergkamp
Shaun Wright-Phillips has heaped praise on one Tottenham man by likening him to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp.
Man Utd couldn’t live with Spurs midfielder
Following Tottenham’s win at Old Trafford, Dejan Kulusevski is finally being recognised for his brilliant play in the middle of the park.
The Swede looks increasingly at home with each game that he plays as a number eight but his display against the Red Devils was undoubtedly his best one in his new role so far.
The 24-year-old was Tottenham’s creator-in-chief on Sunday, with BBC Sport revealing that he broke a 21-year record for chances created by an opposition player in a single game at Old Trafford.
Wright-Phillips’ Bergkamp claim
Wright-Phillips has now said that the positions that Kulusevski takes up on the pitch between the lines are similar to the ones that Bergkamp would for Arsenal in the past.
The former Chelsea man suggested that the Swede has the attributes to thrive in the middle of the park, remarking that his ability to drive at the opposition makes Tottenham more threatening going forward.
When asked about Kulusevski’s performance, Wright-Phillips told Premier League Productions (30/09/24 at 1:20 pm): “It almost, when I was watching the game, it reminded me a tad of some of the positions say Dennis Bergkamp would pick up.
“Back in the day, it was 4-4-2, but Dennis used to always drop away from the frontman, into those spaces in between the midfield and the defence. I think he (Kulusevski) is strong enough and he has the quality enough.
“Once he turns and drives at people, and makes those final third runs, he will create chances. This finish here (second Spurs goal at Old Trafford) was a special finish, for a winger/midfielder that is a striker’s finish.”‘
Kulsuevski’s legs
Kulusevski’s running power and stamina in the middle of the park makes Tottenham far better at pressing and counter-pressing.
It is no accident that the Lilywhites have become much better at winning the ball in the final third, with the former Juventus man playing through the middle and Dominic Solanke leading the line.
Kulusevski and James Maddison have also shown a terrific attitude, being happy to track back and do the dirty work rather than leaving Rodrigo Bentancur exposed.
