Club president thinks they got a good deal out of Tottenham this summer
Real Betis president Angel Haro Garcia has made an admission about Giovani Lo Celso’s form since his move from Tottenham.
Lo Celso’s shining back home
It is fair to say that Lo Celso never really looked settled during his five years at Tottenham and it did not come as a surprise when the midfielder decided to head to Betis this summer in an effort to get his career back on track.
The 27-year-old has already become a key part of Manuel Pellegrini’s starting eleven since his return to Real Betis and is making a difference for the La Liga side.
The recently departed Tottenham man already has five goals to his name in just five matches this season, making the £8.4m spent on him in the summer seem like a bargain.
Real Betis are delighted
Lo Celso was already a popular figure among the Betis faithful, owing to his impressive showing for the club back in 2018-19, and his popularity has now grown even further in light of his exceptional start to the season.
Garcia has now admitted that the midfielder has done much better than what the Spanish side expected.
The Betis president told Onda Cero about Lo Celso: “(We expected him to) perform at a similar level to the one he had here, but he is performing above his level in these matches.
“It seems that he is made for Betis, and he has landed on his feet. We are happy with the performance, and he is happy and content in Sevilla.”
Keeping him wrapped in cotton wool
The outlet also reveals that Pellegrini’s decision to leave Lo Celso out of the Europa Conference League clash against Legia Warszawa did not go down well with Betis supporters.
Explaining that decision, Garcia said: “It is a technical decision by the coach, the medical team, and the sporting management. (It) has to do with a player who is being fundamental, and we have to be careful because he has a lot of games to play at the top.”
Given Lo Celso’s injury record over the past few years, one can understand why Betis are keen to manage the former Tottenham man’s minutes.
