Postecoglou says he is to blame for Tottenham’s capitulation vs Brighton

After his Tottenham side threw away a two-goal lead against Brighton this evening, Ange Postecoglou has claimed the team did not react accordingly and suggested the defeat was just reward for a poor performance.

How did Spurs lose that?

At half-time, you would have been hard-pressed to find anyone who would have backed Brighton to get back into the game, let alone win it.

Spurs were completely dominant in the first half, controlling possession, having far more chances than Brighton, and being clinical in front of goal, with Brennan Johnson and James Maddison firing the Lilywhites into a two-goal lead.

The balance of the game shifted immediately in the second half, though, with Brighton scoring three quickfire goals in 20 minutes to take all three points.

Postecoglou takes the blame

Speaking to the press after the game, Postecoglou was prepared to take responsibility for the result, but made it clear that the team deserved to be on the wrong end of the scoreline after taking their foot off the gas.

He told the BBC: “Fair to say that the second half was unacceptable and we paid a price for that. We probably should have put it to bed in the first half. What we did in that second half is unacceptable and we got what we deserved.

“Maybe we just thought we’d roll out there and play well again and that’s not how it works and we paid for it. We’ve conceded before but it is how you react and our reaction wasn’t what it should be. It’s a bad day for us and when it’s a bad day the responsibility falls at my feet.”

The defence is to blame

I have to say, that is one of the worst defensive performances I’ve seen from the Spurs backline. Destiny Udogie has to be blamed for at least two of the goals, while the normally dependable Micky van de Ven looked really off it today. Cristian Romero and Pedro Porro didn’t exactly shower themselves in glory either, with the pair really struggling to deal with Kaoru Mitoma.
