Journalist claims Tottenham are still behind Big Six rivals in one key area

According to Jack Pitt-Brooke, Tottenham Hotspur still can’t compete with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal in the transfer market, despite making great strides from a commercial point of view.

Spurs aren’t spending as much as rivals

In the last transfer window, Tottenham splashed the cash on Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, and Wilson Odobert, with a reported total of £125m spent in the summer.

Ange Postecoglou has not exactly been starved of funds in his tenure as Spurs boss, with big signings like Brennan Johnson (£55m), Micky van de Ven (£34m), and James Maddison (£40m) all arriving in his first summer in charge.

But, during that time, we have seen Arsenal spend over £100m on Declan Rice and Chelsea spending big on Moises Caicedo. The two Manchester clubs have also had large outlays on the likes of Savio, Joshua Zirkzee, and Rasmus Hojlund.

Tottenham cannot compete

Despite the immense financial success of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the savvy business carried out by Daniel Levy and the Spurs board with various commercial ventures, it is thought Spurs still aren’t at a level where they can throw money around in the same vein as their nearest rivals.

That’s the reading of Pitt-Brooke who, on The Athletic FC Podcast, suggested Tottenham’s comfortable position with Profitability and Sustainability Rules is still not enough to have them spending £100m or more in the market.

“I think the belief internally is that Spurs are kind of under-equitized is the word that’s been used to me. I think it kind of comes from a belief that, even in the era of PSR, there’s still a big gap between what Tottenham can do and what their rivals can do,” Pitt-Brooke said.

“There’s a lot of stuff that the club want to be able to do. I think they would like to be able to maybe throw their weight around a bit more in the transfer market.

“But I think there’s an acceptance that they can’t, in the current position that they’re in, that they don’t really have the capacity to compete on the same level as certainly the biggest teams in revenue terms — City, Liverpool, Manchester United — who are still ahead of Tottenham financially, even with the strides that Spurs have made in the last five years.”

Hard to believe

Obviously, the inner workings of the football club are a bit of a mystery to those of us on the outside, but the idea we can’t spend as much money as the clubs around us does feel a bit off.

Spurs make so much money through sponsorship and other commercial means linked to the stadium, and are one of the best-placed teams when it comes to PSR, so how can that not translate to more freedom in the transfer market?
