Tottenham man’s weakness exposed again during international fixture
Guglielmo Vicario’s big weakness was exposed again on Sunday after Italy fell to a 3-1 loss at home to France in the Nations League.
Guglielmo Vicario’s set-piece problems continue
Vicario‘s struggles to come and claim set pieces and corner kicks are now common knowledge across the Premier League, with almost every opposition team targeting the Italian by putting bodies around him.
The Tottenham number one vowed in the summer that he would work hard to overcome the issue (One Football), but he has not been able to sort it out so far.
His inability to claim crosses was once again under the scanner on Saturday as Les Blues emerged from the San Siro with a comfortable win over Italy.
Vicario’s international woes
The former Empoli man was blamed for not dealing with a corner in Italy’s 4-1 win over Israel last month, but he kept his place in the Azzurri starting eleven ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma for the clash against France.
However, his inability to deal with corners was once again under the scanner as the away side took the lead inside the first two minutes of the game, with Adrien Rabiot meeting Lucas Digne’s out-swinging corner from inside the six-yard box.
France would then go 2-0 up through a Vicario own-goal, although the 28-year-old was unlucky on this occasion as Digne’s free-kick hit the crossbar and rebounded off his back to find the back of the net.
Andrea Cambiaso then brought the home side back into the game with a strike on 35 minutes, but another header from Rabiot in the second-half put some daylight between the sides, with Vicario having no chance on this occasion.
Was Vicario’s at fault for France’s opening goal?
Since Vicario’s problems with set-pieces have been well documented, many will understandably ask questions about his positioning, given that Rabiot had a free header inside the six-year box.
However, this was a flat, out-swinging corner from Digne, which would have been difficult for Vicario to claim.
One can understand why he stayed on his line rather than coming out and flapping at the ball.
