Would winning the Carabao Cup change Spurs? Postecoglou has his say
Ange Postecoglou says winning the Carabao Cup is not the be-all and end-all of the current project underway at Spurs but acknowledges that it could change one big thing about his side’s season.
Carabao Cup has now taken up supreme importance for Spurs
Even the most optimistic of Spurs fans would admit that a top-four finish now looks beyond Tottenham who are rooted to the bottom half of the table at the moment after 20 Premier League matches.
With Europa League qualification not yet assured for the Lilywhites, the Carabao Cup has thus taken up huge importance for the club.
Tottenham are now just three games away from winning their first piece of silverware since 2008, but they will first have to overcome league leaders Liverpool over two legs to make it to the big final in Wembley.
What Carabao Cup win would mean for Spurs
Ange Postecoglou admits that irrespective of what happens in the Carabao Cup, Tottenham’s league form has not been good enough and has to improve.
However, he remarks that lifting a trophy this season will give a different perspective to everyone about the challenges that his side had to overcome over the last couple of months.
When asked if winning the Carabao Cup can have a huge impact on Spurs, the Australian responded (via Football.London): “After sitting here for 18 months and [everyone] telling me what a trophy is going to do for this club, I kind of hope it has a little bit of an impact on everybody!
“I don’t get weighed down by those kinds of things in terms of allowing them to really impact what I think is important for this football club. That is we’re having a tough season.
“Our league form is really poor, we need to improve, but we are in the semi-final of the competition and with the group of players we’ve got at the moment if we can achieve something where they are in their careers, I think it does set you up really well for what we’re trying to build here. I think it does.
“It’s not the be-all and end-all, as I’ve said many times, but if we get a final and happen to win a trophy, we’ll look back on this period of where we are, a small group of players having to rise above and beyond to get there, I think that will be as worthy of the achievement as actually winning it.”
Tottenham need to win today to save their season
Liverpool have a huge advantage since the second leg is at Anfield and they would back themselves to overcome a deficit in front of their home fans.
If Spurs fail to win this evening, it will be extremely difficult for them to make the Carabao Cup final.
A win today will not just keep the club’s hopes of a final alive but will also give the squad and the fans something to look forward to, thus positively impacting the mood around the club.
However, a defeat might see heads in the dressing room start to drop and it would be very difficult for Postecoglou to recover from that.
