What Tottenham are thinking about Micky Van de Ven amid Real Madrid interest
Real Madrid have held internal talks over a move for Tottenham’s Micky Van de Ven, but getting a deal over the line will be extremely complicated.
Two of Real Madrid’s greatest modern-day legends, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric, were both signed from Spurs, and the La Liga giants are now looking to raid the North London club for another one of their stars.
Several sources have claimed over the last few months that Micky van de Ven is emerging as Real Madrid’s top centre-back target.
According to some British outlets, Van de Ven is also on the radar of PSG and Liverpool as he continues to establish a reputation as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.
Tottenham have no intention of allowing Micky van de Ven to leave
Journalist Dean Jones has now confirmed that the Dutchman is one of the names discussed by the Santiago Bernabeu hierarchy as they look to strengthen their central defence.
However, he explained that, unlike Madrid’s other centre-back targets, a deal for the 24-year-old will prove very complicated because of Tottenham’s unwillingness to sell him.
When asked about Los Blancos’ interest in the Netherlands international, Jones told TEAMtalk: “Van de Ven has been mentioned in the same way that Madrid have looked at Ibrahima Konate, Dayot Upamecano and Marc Guehi, but it is different because those three players are becoming free agents and that is a market Madrid are very keen to exploit when they can.
“Van de Ven would be a much different situation as he has more than three years remaining on his current deal and the club are hoping to tie him up to a new one, on better terms over an extended period.
“Obviously, Madrid have the power to turn any player’s head, but they would have to pay big money for him as Spurs really do not want to lose him. They consider his experience and leadership to be absolutely vital, on top of the fact he’s a great defender and can also be a threat in terms of scoring goals.”
Spurs now fully focused on tying Van de Ven to a new contract
It has been reported over recent weeks that Tottenham’s top priority at the moment is to tie Van de Ven down to a new deal.
The centre-back is currently on a modest salary at Spurs, and the Lilywhites are keen to rectify that and make him one of the highest-paid players in the squad.
However, one would think that Tottenham will have to perform well on the pitch this season to convince the former Wolfsburg man that he can fulfil his ambitions in North London.
