Possible Luke Getsy Replacement Sounds Like A Big Justin Fields Fan

There are many questions the Chicago Bears have to answer once the 2023 season is over. Most of them center around what GM Ryan Poles will do with the coaching staff and quarterback Justin Fields. Many believe the wise thing to do is run it back another year with Fields and head coach Matt Eberflus. Both have shown a lot of progress this season, going 7-5 in the last 12 games. There is one notable sticking point. If that happens, what will the Bears do about Luke Getsy? Many believe the offensive coordinator should be gone regardless of whether Fields stays.

The feeling is he doesn’t have a firm grasp of how to utilize Fields properly, not to mention his underwhelming situational awareness and lack of identity. If Eberflus were to make a change, he would have to find somebody who not only has a proven track record but somebody who would embrace the idea of working with Fields. One name getting some attention is Greg Roman, the former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator. He’s worked with Lamar Jackson, Tyrod Taylor, and Colin Kaepernick.

Coincidentally, it turns out he’s a big fan of Fields, as he revealed on The NFL Blitz for SiriusXM NFL.

“Oh I think Justin Fields has a ton of potential. I really do. I think his flashes this year…I think their team’s on the rise. I think it’d be really hard to move on from him at this point. I think he’s shown a lot of promise. So I mean if you just absolutely feel like, you know, the quarterback in college is the guy, then maybe you make the move. But I don’t know man, they’re building something and I think that kid’s got a chance to be pretty special.”

Roman would be a logical choice to replace Luke Getsy.

His track record with dual-threat quarterbacks speaks for itself. Kaepernick compiled over 9500 yards, 57 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions across 39 games with him in San Francisco. They reached two NFC championships and a Super Bowl together. Roman moved on to Buffalo, where Tyrod Taylor had back-to-back 3,000-yard passing seasons with 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, making the Pro Bowl in 2015. Last but not least, he spent six seasons in Baltimore, where he transformed Jackson into the 2019 league MVP. The Ravens made the playoffs three times in four years. However, the lack of production in the passing game made Roman a scapegoat for changes.

People presume that he is incapable of elevating wide receivers, focusing too much on the running game and tight ends. In reality, that isn’t entirely fair. Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, Sammy Watkins, and Marquise Brown all cracked 1,000 yards working with him. The problem in Baltimore was they never gave him good options to work with. Most of the time, it was either guys who weren’t any good or guys who kept getting hurt. Now, the year he leaves, Baltimore drafts Zay Flowers and signs Odell Beckham Jr.

The truth is Roman is a solid football coach who would know precisely how to utilize Fields’ talents. It comes down to whether the Bears choose to keep the quarterback and replace Luke Getsy. Those answers should be forthcoming by next week.
