Pepperdine came away with a five-set victory at UC Santa Barbara in NCAA men’s volleyball on Thursday, the only one of the seven matches that did not result in a sweep. BYU, playing for the first time in nearly two weeks, swept LIU.

The recaps and top performances follow, but first a look at what’s on tap Friday.

The big match of the has top-ranked and unbeaten Long Beach State of the Big West home for No. 4 UCLA of the MPSF. This is their first meeting since UCLA, en route to the title, swept in last year’s national NCAA semifinals. The same teams play at UCLA on Saturday.

Fourth-ranked Stanford of the MPSF is back at No. 2 Hawai’i two days after losing there in four. 

Also in the Big West, CSUN is home for The Master’s University, a 5-0 NAIA team from Santa Clarita, California.

There are three MIVA conference matches as first-place and No. 6 Ohio State goes to No. 13 Loyola Chicago, No. 11 Ball State is at McKendree and No. 20 Purdue Fort Wayne is at Queens.

Two Conference Carolinas league matches show Barton at Lees-McRae and Mount Olive at King. Emmanuel goes to independent Tusculum.

Three EIVA teams are in action as Harvard is home for the NEC’s Merrimack, Charleston entertains Saint Francis (PA) of the NEC and Princeton plays host to independent Lincoln Memorial.

Also in the NEC, Daemen is home for the ECC’s St. Thomas Aquinas. The only SIAC team playing is 0-10 Central State, which goes to Maryville in Missouri. Independent Missouri S&T is home for Talladega.

There is one Pro Volleyball Federation match when the second-place Grand Rapids Rise (1-0) go to the first-place Atlanta Vibe (3-0) for a 7 p.m. Eastern first serve on YouTube.

No. 12 Pepperdine (8-2) of the MPSF came away with a 25-13, 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9 the Big West’s No. 17 UC Santa Barbara (4-8). Pepperdine won despite getting out-hit .281-.232, but more than made up for it witha 16-8 blocks advantage. Ethan Watson had 10 kills with one error in 17 attacks, an ace, a dig and nine blocks, two solo.

Cole Rasic led the Waves with 12 kills, hit .320, and had an ace, four blocks and five digs. Cole Ketrzynski had 11 kills, two assists, five blocks and three digs, and Akin Akinwumi also had 11 kills to go with an assist, three blocks and three digs. Setter Tyler Stewart had a kill in his only try, 37 assists and 10 digs.

UCSB’s Rees Barnett had 18 kills, no aces but five serving errors, two blocks and eight digs. Owen Birg had 13 kills and Ben Coordt 12. Coordt had one error in 28 swings, an assist, two aces and five digs. Greg Baglio had a kill in his only attempt, 47 assists, two blocks and four digs, and Joe Wallace had 10 digs and four assists … 

Eight-ranked BYU (8-3) of the MPSF, which hadn’t played since January 27, won 25-23, 25-22, 25-16 over visiting LIU (3-7) of the NEC. Trent Moser led the Cougars with 10 kills but hit .095. Nine of his teammates had kills. LIU’s Gio Collazo had 11 kills, hit .318, and had an assist and two blocks …

Daemen (5-2) opened NEC play by sweeping visiting D’Youville (4-1) as Zach Schneider tied the program record in a three-set match with 19 kills. Schneider had five errors in 32 attacks to hit .438 in the 25-22, 28-26, 25-16 victory and had two blocks and a dig. Daemen hit .342 and had seven aces — four by Cameron Milligan — and 14 errors. D’Youville hit .190 and had three aces and 15 errors. Shaun Vattakuzhiyil led with nine kills … 

In the MIVA, McKendree (4-4, 1-1) hit .469 and swept 26-24, 25-17, 25-17 at Quincy (5-2. 1-2) as Nikos Xydakis had 21 kills and hit .655 after having two errors in 29 attacks. He added an ace and three digs. Quincy’s Raje Alleyne had 10 kills, an assist, an ace, a solo block and five digs … 

Sacred Heart (4-6) of the NEC hit .390 and swept visiting NJIT (7-5) of the EIVA for its first victory over the Highlanders since 2019. Patrick Mucherino led SHU with 14 kills, hit .346, and had an ace, a block and six digs. Carlos Santa Cruz had six kills with one error in 15 attacks, five assists, an ace, two digs and four blocks, one solo. Jaron Popp had six kills in 10 errorless swings, an ace, a dig and five blocks, one solo. NJIT’s Will Migdal had 10 kills, Andrew Fedmasu nine and Antonio Felicianao eight … 

Concordia Irvine (4-1) of the MPSF swept visiting No. 19 UC San Diego (3-8) of the Big West 25-17, 25-13, 25-23 as six players combined for 22 total kills. UCSD, outblocked 13-3.5, hit minus .024 … 

Dominican (3-6) of the ECC swept visiting University of Mount Saint Vincent, which made the trip from the Bronx to the other side of the Hudson River just north of New York City on the New Jersey border for its season opener. Wiley Phinehas led with 13 kills, hit .348, and had six digs and two blocks … Fort Valley State of the SIAC’s match with St. Andrews was canceled.
