Ohashi Gym signs hard hitting Ren Ohashi

Earlier today Ohashi Gym held a press conference to another top amateur signing, something they’ve now down 3 times in 8 days. This time it was hard hitting southpaw Ren Ohashi [大橋蓮] who was brought out in front of the Japanese boxing press, as the fighter and promoter both spoke about what the future plans are, and why fans should be excited about the 22 year old hopeful.

Ren Ohashi, now referred to as Ren to help prevent confusion, won the All Japan Lightweight title in 2022 and also won a National Athletic Meet whilst running up a reported 47-17 (17) record in the unpaid ranks. A lot of his success came down to his brutal left hand, which actually resulted in stoppage wins in the Final and Semi Final of the All Japan tournament in 2022. That left hand is his key weapon, and should be even more potent in the professional ranks, with smaller gloves.

Despite his boxing success Ren wasn’t someone who took to the sport at an early age. Instead he was actually into Karata until High School, where he picked up boxing and adapted really well to his new sport, in part thanks to his much vaunted left hand. He was part of the team at the  Tokyo University of Agriculture boxing club, but the club had issues with illegal drugs and the club was suspended indefinitely. This saw him consider his options, and rather than wait until 2028 for the LA games, he decided to turn professional, doing so with Ohashi Gym.

At the press conference Hideyuki Ohashi, Ren’s promoter and the Ohashi gym owner, explained that this was the first time in 30 years that he had signed someone who shared his surname, but neither the men are related, rather similar to recent signings Sora and Shogo Tanaka also sharing a surname and not being related.

Talking about his new hopeful Hideyuki  stated that the power of Ren should help him develop into a thrilling champion, with the potential to score 1-punch KO’s.

From what we’ve seen of him, including the fight below, Ren looks like a brutal puncher, not something you can often say of an amateur, but someone who needs time to develop in a few areas. If he can have a couple of years to develop he can go a very, very long way. For now however the focus will be on his Pro-Test in April and a planned debut in June.
