Man Utd’s nervy win against Sheffield United sees TWO Premier League records broken as Ten Hag eases some pressure

MANCHESTER UNITED’S 4-2 victory over Sheffield United marked the breaking of two Premier League records.

Bruno Fernandes put in a captain’s performance to drag Erik ten Hag‘s side to all three points, while condemning the Blades to deeper relegation worry.

With help from games elsewhere last night, including 2-0 wins for both Crystal Palace and Everton and a 1-0 win for Bournemouth, the Premier League has hit a new high for goals scored.

Last season a final day goal glut saw the season tally for goals climb to a new record of 1,084 in a 38-game season.

However, with four weeks of the season still to go a whopping 1,092 goals have now been scored.

Saying this, the season will have to go some way to beat the 1222 goals scored in the 42-game season of the Premier League’s inaugural campaign in 1992/93.

Meanwhile, Chris Wilder‘s side face being relegated back to the Championship if they lose their next game.

They will have two glaring stats to look at which has seen them drop to last; goals for and against.

United are the lowest goalscorers in the competition with 33 goals, but that is not where a new league record has been set.

Instead it is their goals against which have cost them dearly, with 92 goals already conceded.

Man Utd’s four goals last night tipped them over the edge in terms of having the worst-ever defensive record in a 38-game Premier League season.

Derby, who had the fewest points total ever with 11 in 2007/08, conceded 89 goals in comparison.

Highest scoring Premier League seasons

With this season becoming the highest scoring season in Premier League history, we look at the other highest scoring seasons:

1992/92: 1222 goals – 462 matches

1993/94: 1195 goals – 462 matches

1994/95: 1195 goals – 462 matches

2022/23: 1084 goals – 380 matches

2018/19: 1072 goals – 380 matches

2021/22: 1071 goals – 380 matches

2011/12: 1066 goals – 380 matches

The overall Premier League record however, was set by Swindon in 1994 when they conceded 100 goals in a 42 games season.

If they continue conceding at their current rate in the final four games of the season – 2.7 goals per game – United are well on course to beat that.

Pundits verdict on Ten Hag's future

Where do the pundits stand on Erik ten Hag's Manchester United future

Jamie Carragher – Sacked

“I don’t see how Erik ten Hag stays. It’s just performance after performance.”

Gary Neville – Stay if he wins the FA Cup

“To sack a manager who’s won two trophies in his first two seasons at the club I think would be extreme.”

Louis Saha – On the fence

“I don’t see it as clearly but they need changes from the players but they need changes from him as well.”

Alan Shearer – Sacked

“I believe the future of the Man Utd manager is already determined. Even if they win the FA Cup I think he’s gone.”
