Fan armed with CORNER FLAG confronts stewards as Sheffield Wednesday fans invade pitch after all-but avoiding relegation
A MORON brandishing a corner flag confronted stewards after Sheffield Wednesday’s win over West Brom at Hillsborough.
A handful of fans raced onto the pitch in celebration after the Owls all-but guaranteed they would stay up with their 3-0 win.
Ugly scenes marred the end of Sheffield Wednesday’s win[/caption] A fan was seen wielding a corner flag[/caption] A minority of supporters were involved[/caption]But the atmosphere soured when the fan, who had ripped out the flag as he ran on, threatened security staff with it.
After an initial stand-off just outside the penalty area at the Kop end of the ground, he was shepherded towards the goalmouth and stewards were able to apprehend him.
Chants of “w***er, w***er” rang around the stadium as he was led away.
Wednesday were fined £50,000 by the FA after last season’s League One play-off semi final against Peterborough following a full-scale pitch invasion.
An assistant referee was knocked over in the chaos with the independent regulatory commission taking action after fireworks were thrown onto the pitch and fans entered the field of play at multiple points during the match.
SunSport have contacted South Yorkshire police for comment.
After the win, Owls boss Danny Rohl said: “It was a big, big performance from my team.
“With the spirit, with what we invest against a strong side.
“When you look to the game and how they play, how they press, it’s not an easy one. But today I saw a team that were really on fire.
“I felt this in the week, the last two weeks I have felt really the spirit in training.
“For me, it is nearly the best performance on the ball, defending as a team, how compact we were.
“If we overplayed, we closed our net again and then there was the situation at the end of the game where we defended our box like it’s a draw or 1-0.
