5 things to know about the WNBA's expansion to Toronto
The WNBA is bringing a 14th franchise to the league, and it’s (officially) happening in Toronto, Canada.
Since March, there have been lots of rumblings about a WNBA franchise in Canada, which intensified after CBC Sports’ Shireen Ahmed reported Larry Tanenbaum, minority owner and chairman of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), was pushing for a new team in Toronto with his holding company, Kilmer Group.
The chatter got audibly louder at the 2024 WNBA Draft when commissioner Cathy Engelbert Engelbert confirmed in April that the WNBA was engaged in conversations with Toronto. On Thursday, Engelbert announced the Toronto expansion at a press conference.
