How Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd record compares to every manager since Busby as Ratcliffe considers sack despite FA Cup win

ERIK TEN HAG is statistically one of Manchester United’s best managers since Sir Alex Ferguson – but that still may not be enough to save his job.

The Dutchman could be sacked despite winning the FA Cup with a brilliant 2-1 win against Manchester City on Saturday.

Ten Hag, 54, has taken charge of 114 matches following his appointment from Ajax in 2022.

In his first campaign, he managed to seal a top-four finish and won the League Cup.

However, the club took a step backwards this season, leading new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to question whether Ten Hag is the right boss to lead the Red Devils forward.

United finished in a record-low 8th place in the Premier League.

The club was also embarrassed in the Champions League, finishing bottom of their group.

In total, he has won 66 matches during his tenure at Old Trafford, leaving him with a win percentage of 57.9 per cent.

That is a better record than all but one of his predecessors since Ferguson.

Ralf Rangnick, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes are all worse off when compared to Ten Hag, while Jose Mourinho is marginally better.

Rangnick recorded the lowest win percentage during his interim spell in charge.

He won 38 per cent of his 29 matches, while Solskjaer won 54.2 per cent and Mourinho had 58.3 per cent.

Van Gaal’s 52.4 per cent was slightly worse than David Moyes‘ 52.9 per cent.

Ten Hag has lost more games than all but one of those who followed before him since Ferguson.

He suffered defeats in 31 matches, while Solskjaer lost 38 of his 168 games.

Mourinho achieved the most success in terms of trophies as he won the League Cup, Europa League and Community Shield during his spell.

Ten Hag's five worst defeats

ERIK TEN HAG has suffered some heavy defeats during his tenure as Manchester United manager.

5. Copenhagen 4-3 Man Utd, November 2023

The damaging defeat saw the Red Devils dumped out of the Champions League.

4. Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth, December 2023

It was the first time the Cherries had ever won at Old Trafford with the players being booed off.

3. Brentford 4-0 Man Utd, August 2022

Perhaps a sign of things to come, in Ten Hag’s second Premier League game, his side was dismantled by the Bees.

2. Crystal Palace 4-0 Man Utd, May 2024

The heavy defeat to the Eagles saw the Dutchman edge ever closer to the sack.

1. Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd, March 2023

Man Utd were embarrassed at the hands of their bitter rivals as they crumbled at Anfield as it was the club’s worst defeat in 92 years.

Ten Hag is next on the silverware list, with the Carabao Cup and this season’s FA Cup.

Van Gaal also won the Cup but was dispatched with almost immediately afterwards.

Ten Hag’s record also puts him in good stead against the most prominent of Man Utd’s post-war bosses.

The legendary Sir Matt Busby had a win rate of 51.4 per cent from 1141 games in charge.

Meanwhile, Ron Atkinson – the boss Fergie took over from – won exactly half of his 292 games.

Tommy Docherty won 46.9 per cent of his 228 games, while the 201 games managed by Dave Sexton yielded a 40.3 win rate.
