Polo end 18-year wait for Spanish women’s title
Real Club de Polo produced the perfect weekend performance to win the Spanish women’s Iberdrola League 2023-2024 with a final 3-2 win over Atlètic Terrassa.
It was something of a surprise final showdown between the sides who finished third and fourth in the league season, knocking out regular season top two Club de Campo and Junior FC on Saturday.
In the final, the Barcelona club stormed into the lead through Xantal Giné, who collected a rebound after a penalty corner. Flor Amundson doubled the advantage in the 13th minute.
Atlètic, though, had already produced some impressive phases and they got their reward quickly when Clara Badia was all alone, leaving her able to net a penalty corner.
It remained that way through to half-time after which Atlètic equalised via Antonella Rinaldi.
But the winner duly arrived from Polo five minutes later when Lorena Vives collected a rebound off goalkeeper Clara Pérez to put her team ahead.
Jordi Alastrue’s team did not back down in the final minutes and defended the result with possession and attacking, earning them the national championship and a place in the EHL FINAL12 along with Club de Campo next season.
Alastrue said of the win: “The club needed a title like this; we had not won the league since 2006. In this three-year cycle in which I have been at the helm, it was a dream we had and, with last year’s cup run, we already saw that we were capable of winning a title like this after so long.
“We have achieved our number one goal, winning the league, and I close my cycle with the women’s team in the best way, incredible, the best ending.”
