8 photos of Simone Biles from her first night at U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials

Simone Biles and the best American gymnasts are competing this weekend at U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials, looking to earn a spot on Team USA’s roster. The first day of women’s competition was Friday and the second day is Sunday. (The men’s team is on a Thursday-Saturday schedule.)

Biles, the greatest of all time, is expected to make her third Olympic team after also competing at the 2016 Rio Games and 2021 Tokyo Games. As USA TODAY Sports‘ Nancy Armour noted, “here Simone Biles is at 27 at the U.S. gymnastics Olympic trials, better now than she was in 2016, when she won four Olympic gold medals.”

There are so many talented athletes trying to make the team with her, including reigning Olympic all-around champion, Suni Lee, and 2021 Olympic silver medalist Jordan Chiles. But injuries to others have been concerning.

But Biles is in her own league, despite some missteps Friday, and keeps raising the bar. So here are eight photos (and a couple videos) from her first day of competition at U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials in Minneapolis.
