The flyweight contenders headlined Saturday’s event at Ball Arena in Denver, with both fighters having plenty on the line. Namajunas, a two-time strawweight champion, looked to further establish herself as a contender at 125 pounds; Cortez, undefeated in five UFC appearances, was seeking the biggest win of her young career.
For five rounds, the more experienced Namajunas controlled much of the action, out-striking Cortez from range and getting the better of her in the grappling. Cortez put on a spirited effort as she shook off early trouble and authored a late charge in rounds 4 and 5 that proved to be too little, too late when it came to the judges.
All three judge scored the contest in Namajunas’ favor.
