White Sox Reportedly Turned Down Trade Offer From Padres

Chris Getz has held the White Sox general manager position for less than a year but has already been gifted with two of the hottest pitching commodities on the trade market.

Over the offseason, he was tasked with trading Dylan Cease. It was well documented that Getz had a high asking price for the former runner-up in the American League Cy Young voting. It was an asking price he was unwilling to budge from until it was met. Getz’s stingy negotiating style eventually netted him a four-player return from the San Diego Padres, headlined by top-100 prospect Drew Thorpe.

Now Getz is looking to cash in on Garrett Crochet’s early success as a starter, with USA Today’s Bob Nightingale reporting that the White Sox intend to trade him after a failed attempt at extending him. Getz has already received several offers for Crochet, including one from the Dodgers. However, the White Sox are reportedly seeking a handful of young prospects with “tremendous upside”.

One of the advantages that Getz has from inheriting Cease is that he already has some familiarity with the rest of the league’s farm systems after weeks of trying to land the best return. He has also been able to build up relationships with several general managers who made him trade offers. According to Nightengale, the Padres are trying to strike a deal with Getz again.

Over the weekend he reported that the Padres “recently made an offer” for Crochet, but “it was quickly dismissed.” He added that due to Getz’s high asking price opposing GMs are uncertain whether Crochet will be dealt.

The White Sox reportedly still intend to trade Crochet, with the Yankees named as another team interested in landing the southpaw’s services. However, according to Nightengale the White Sox are “insisting” that Spencer Jones is included in the deal. Jones is a 23-year-old outfielder who is currently listed as the No. 74 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. After drafting left-hander Hagen Smith pitcher with the fifth overall pick, the front office is hoping to address the need for more impact bats in the farm system by trading Crochet. Jones would certainly fit that description.
