Cole Kmet Couldn’t Hide His Excitement Watching Caleb Williams In Practice
Cole Kmet was always a fan of Justin Fields. The two grew close almost immediately and shared a strong connection since the quarterback arrived. Kmet had the two best seasons of his career with Fields under center. However, the NFL can be a cold-hearted business at times. After another season of failing to impress as a passer, the Chicago Bears felt it was time to try something new at quarterback. Fields was traded to Pittsburgh. That meant Kmet would have to get on board with whomever GM Ryan Poles brought in. That ended up being Caleb Williams.
The tight end wasn’t sure what to expect. Yeah, Williams was the #1 overall pick, but that didn’t mean much. Plenty of former quarterbacks who went that high ended up disappointing. Williams would have to show him something in practice before Kmet would get on board. Apparently, it didn’t take long. The Bears released their latest 1920 Football Drive episode covering OTAs and minicamps. One segment featured Williams showing off his accuracy during drills. Kmet couldn’t help but keep reacting to each impressive completion.
Cole Kmet can already see the future.
Part of the problem with Fields during his tenure in Chicago was consistency. For every accurate pass he threw, there would be one off-target. That made it difficult to ever keep the offense on time and in rhythm. This is why accuracy is widely considered the most vital trait a quarterback can have. He must be able to put the ball where it needs to be on every snap. Williams had a reputation in college for excellent ball placement, always seeming to locate it where only receivers had a chance. That clip gives you a small taste of what experts talked about.
It appears Cole Kmet can see the same thing. The ball is going where it’s supposed to with more consistency, which should mean more big plays and more points for the Bears offense. More points means more wins. Kmet has never played for a winning team in his career. Williams could be the ticket to changing that. One can understand why he’d be excited about the rookie’s rapid progress. If he is buying in this quickly, Bears fans have every reason to jump on the hype train.
