Bears May Suddenly Have New Trade Partner For Larry Borom
The Chicago Bears have somewhat of a logjam unfolding at offensive tackle. They drafted Kiran Amegadjie in the 3rd round last April. It is a fair assumption he will be on the main roster after final cuts in August. That is notable because last year, they only carried one backup tackle. If they plan to do the same this year, Amegadjie is the favorite to be that guy. This leaves the Bears with a decision to make regarding Larry Borom. He’s been their primary backup since he was drafted in 2021. They could carry a fourth tackle, but it is possible they might look to trade the veteran.
He only has one year left on his current contract. If the Bears could get a draft pick back for him, it would be a win for their long-term outlook. The challenge is finding a team that might be willing to give up a decent return for his services. Well, that may not be difficult. According to multiple insiders, the New Orleans Saints were forced to place star tackle Ryan Ramczyk on the reserve/PUP list. Due to NFL rules, that means he is out for the season, leaving a gaping hole at right tackle for their offense.
This will force them to choose Taliese Fuaga and Trevor Penning as the likely starters. Considering Penning has underwhelmed and Fuaga is a rookie, this leaves New Orleans in need of at least some veteran depth.
Larry Borom would at least give them options.
As of now, the Saints lack experience at offensive tackle. Two of their top four options are rookies. The other doesn’t have much playing time under his belt. Borom has started 23 games. He’s still only 25 years old and hasn’t been terrible in his appearances. While nobody would mistake him for a high-end starter, he would at least be a reliable bridge to whoever the next guy is. It comes down to how desperate the Saints are to find help now that Ramczyk is out of the picture.
There is no question Larry Borom would help. As always, price is the determining factor. In these situations, some kind of pick swap is how teams do business. In this case, the Saints’ 5th round pick in 2025 for Borom and a 6th round pick from the Bears feels like it would be a fair deal. Chicago gets a higher draft position, while New Orleans doesn’t technically lose a pick and still gets their tackle help. Keep this in mind as the next month unfolds for both teams.
