The 43-year-old appeared off the bench in a 4-0 friendly win over Greece in August 2006.

Kirkland replaced Paul Robinson in goal for the second half at Old Trafford in Steve McClaren’s first match in charge.

Almost two decades on, he has been invited by the FA to receive an England cap for the appearance.

The opportunity came about after Edge Hill University staff told FA bosses Kirkland never received his cap.

Kirkland had been awarded an honorary doctorate by the university for his mental health work.

He is now set to be a guest of honour at Wembley Stadium on October 10 for the Three Lions’ Nations League clash with Greece.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper was made an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in recognition of his charity work.

Kirkland has supported a number of mental health organisations following his own long-term battle with painkiller addiction and depression.

Speaking via Wigan Today, he explained: “It was an amazing day for me and my family and I’m extremely proud to have been invited to Edge Hill University to receive this doctorate.

“I’d like to dedicate it to the people who work hard for others but will never receive the recognition they deserve.

“I hope it opens doors so we can do more good.”

He also admitted he had “no idea” about his England cap, adding: “It was an amazing touch. All of the staff at Edge Hill have been superb to me.”

Kirkland retired in 2016 aged 35 after a career which saw him make 189 Premier League appearances for Wigan, Liverpool, Coventry and West Brom.
