China looked in prime position to take top spot in the Men’s Artistic Team All-Around event, but Su missed the bar during his routine, falling twice in quick succession and squandering their chances.

The gymnastic event sees teams of four compete at multiple different disciplines with every score counting towards a team’s total, meaning Su’s mistake impacted the entire team’s standings.

But it wasn’t his gut-wrenching mistake that left fans heartbroken, but rather what followed immediately after.

The 24-year-old returned to the side of the arena where his teammates were watching and sat separately from them, leaving three chairs between him and his compatriots.

Su looked lonely as he watched on and fans were left feeling for the star having just seen his mistake.

One wrote: “My heart is breaking for Su Weide. I hope he doesn’t take it too personal. But I fear he will.”

While another added: “I hope Su Weide will be alright.”

A third commented: “Poor Su Weide.”

And a fourth posted: “Spare a moment for Su Weide… his teammates have deserted him.”

While BBC commentator Matt Baker said: “China had a buffer but it wasn’t big enough. That poor lad there.

“Three big deductions. What a shame for him. This is a brutal format, sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t.”

Su’s slip meant China were deducted two points for the double mistake leaving their score at 259.062, and opening the door for Japan to steal the gold medal with a score of 259.594.

The US took Bronze, while Team GB narrowly missed out on a podium place in fourth.

It’s not all over for Su Weide yet, with the gymnast having a shot at redemption in the coming days during the individual events.
