More Bad Nate Davis News Suggests Bears Reaching A Breaking Point
The Chicago Bears have issues along the interior of their offensive line. They still haven’t cemented a center as Coleman Shelton and Ryan Bates continue their competition. By far, the bigger issue is Nate Davis. People are getting tired of the veteran right guard. He was supposed to be somebody who could settle down that position when they signed him to a healthy contract last year. Instead, he’s been easily the most unreliable. He missed almost all of the training camp in 2023 due to health problems. Now he continues missing camp practices this year with more of them. This comes after barely participating in OTAs and minicamps.
Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron insisted Davis would still be the team’s starter once he returned. However, that statement is becoming increasingly difficult to sell the longer he’s out. Head coach Matt Eberflus again indicated a lot of the decision-making is geared around availability.
Nate Davis is approaching Chase Claypool territory.
The guy might be a talented player, but he doesn’t seem committed to the cause. His track record of mental and physical durability isn’t great. There were rumblings that former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t like Davis when he played there. It is becoming easier to see why. You can’t depend on him. There comes a time when a team must send a message. Either bench him or cut him. Nate Davis would only bring back $600,000 if the Bears released him. There isn’t much financial incentive for doing so. Still, it isn’t like he’s earning that money anyway. They could at least open up that roster spot for somebody who can actually do something with it.
GM Ryan Poles may stay patient for the time being, hoping Davis comes around. Just don’t be surprised if a move happens in the near future if the veteran remains sidelined.
