Brandon Aiyuk trade rumors: Steelers, Patriots, and Browns the reported finalists for 49ers star WR

Here's what the Steelers, Browns, and Patriots might be offering in a Brandon Aiyuk trade.

For months, we have talked about the possibility of a Brandon Aiyuk trade. The San Francisco 49ers’ seemingly steadfast refusal to pay the 2023 Second-Team All-Pro what he’s worth with a new contract has opened a Pandora’s Box of discontent for the defending NFC champions.

Finally, we might be able to put this saga behind us very soon. Maybe. Potentially. Uh, we’ll see.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, three teams have been narrowed as the finalists to trade for Aiyuk. They are the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team most connected to Aiyuk, the New England Patriots, and the Cleveland Browns. Aiyuk has reportedly also said he would play for the Washington Commanders, which would be a reunion with his old college quarterback, Jayden Daniels. However, Washington has apparently removed itself from talks.

And per Rapoport, even without a no-trade clause, Aiyuk has a heavy say in where he lands if he leaves the Bay Area:

While it’s unclear what the Steelers have offered in exchange for Aiyuk, NBC Sports’ Matt Maicco has laid out what the Patriots and Browns are reportedly willing to surrender in an Aiyuk trade. Here are the skeletons of both apparent offers, as follows:

Browns:

  • WR Amari Cooper
  • Undisclosed high draft pick(s)

Patriots:

  • WR Kendrick Bourne
  • Undisclosed high draft pick(s)

It’s reasonable to assume that the Steelers would also have to trade a receiver for Aiyuk, though their options to ship off to another team. are more limited after George Pickens.

It seems clear that the 49ers will not part with Aiyuk unless they get a capable playmaker in return, in addition to draft selections. Still, even if San Francisco likes a deal, as a pending unrestricted free agent, Aiyuk himself has to agree to it because he still would have to sign a long-term contract with his new potential team. He has more leverage than your average disgruntled star, for sure.

It’s early August. The regular season is just about a month away. If we’re going to get an Aiyuk resolution, it feels like it’s finally on the horizon. At least, I hope so.
