Distraught Olympic athlete breaks down in tears and is left shaking after failing to register a score in heptathlon
CHARI HAWKINS was left utterly distraught after having her dreams of heptathlon glory brutally crushed.
The Team USA star received a no mark after failing to clear the 1.71m mark in the high jump portion of the competition.
The 33-year-old’s third attempt at clearing the height was her closest, with her body entirely clear of the bar.
But she pulled up her legs a bit late, clipping the bar and using all three attempts at the height.
Hawkins – whose personal best in the high jump is 1.85m – was overcome with emotion after learning of her no mark.
Tears streamed down her face before she collapsed to the floor in a heap of misery.
She was caught on camera saying: “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh. I don’t even know what to do [now].
“I don’t know what happened. I’m like literally so shocked right now. No! No, no, no.”
Hawkins was comforted by Brit Katerina Johnson-Thompson.
Dame Jessica Ennis was full of sympathy for the heartbroken Hawkins, saying: “It does happen, but it’s so devastating.

“You put all that time and energy into being here, you start with the fantastic hurdles and then we see here on her third attempt.
“Her runway looked well, but she just stopped on her curve.
“Her speed completely dropped and she didn’t create any height to clear that bar and it’s devastating because that’s the end of her heptathlon, unfortunately.”
Giving further insight into Hawkins’ emotions, the Team GB legend added: “It’s the most devastating feeling in the world.
Because you’ve put all that training [in] and you’ve prepared for that one moment.
“There’s no going back after that.
“No height and you score zero points, there’s absolutely no chance of bringing that back unfortunately.”
