The White Sox Should Take A Chance On These Available Players

With the White Sox being the worst team in the major leagues and on pace to be one of, if not the worst team in MLB history, the White Sox have an opportunity to try out many different players to see who could be a contributor next year and beyond.

Now, with two intriguing players recently DFA’d, the White Sox have an opportunity to give these players some playing time and see if they have anything left in the tank. These two players are Nick Gordon of the Marlins and formerly of the Twins, and Cavan Biggio of the Dodgers, formerly of the Blue Jays.

While neither of them are having particularly good seasons, hence why they were DFA’d, they have both shown potential in the past. This is the type of season where the White Sox can see if they can unlock any potential out of players that have shown it in the past.

That is exactly what the White Sox have done with Nick Senzel, but he hasn’t proven anything during his tenure with the White Sox. Now, they should shift to either Nick Gordon or Cavan Biggio and give them the same opportunity they gave to Senzel.

Gordon is the more intriguing of the two, as he is hitting .227 with eight homers, 32 RBIs and five stolen bases. While this isn’t a great season, he is just two years removed from a 2022 season that saw him hit .272 with nine homeruns and 50 RBIs over a full season.

While there is no indication that a change of scenery would turn it around for Gordon, the White Sox have nothing to lose from letting him get some at-bats as the season winds down, seeing if he can get back to his 2022 form.

While Cavan Biggio is having a much worse season at the plate, .197 with five homers and 19 RBIs, he actually has positive WAR, which would make him one of the more valuable players on the White Sox. His positional versatility could be something that Chris Getz could covet as the season winds down.

Biggio is just 29 and is a few years removed from a 2023 season where he had 1.3 offensive WAR according to Baseball Reference. While he was never the best hitter, perhaps in a relaxed environment with the White Sox he could turn it around and find a new life in Chicago.

The White Sox are likely better off ensuring that their young players get a good look for the next two months, it wouldn’t hurt to shuffle in one of these players over someone like Nick Senzel, as it wouldn’t take much opportunity away from Brooks Baldwin or Miguel Vargas, as Senzel has been an occasional bench bat.

However, the best move the White Sox could do at this point would be to bring up infielder Bryan Ramos from AAA, but if they aren’t planning on doing that, they might as well try out Gordon or Biggio, as they could provide some juice on a new team.
