Bohachuk-Ortiz undercard report: Gabriela Fundora shuts out Daniela Asenjo, retains IBF flyweight title
LAS VEGAS – Another fight, another successful defense for Gabriela Fundora.
Utilizing her height and reach, Fundora, rated No. 1 by The Ring in the female flyweight ratings, defeated Daniela Asenjo by decision over 10 one-sided rounds. All three judges scored the bout 100-90 for Fundora, who improved to 14-0, 6 knockouts and defended her IBF title.
Asenjo was game, but Fundora was the more polished and effective fighter throughout most of the fight. Fundora punished Asenjo as she attempted to get inside Fundora’s guard.
The towering southpaw was content to stand and trade in the center of the ring, but did her best work walking Asenjo down, raining punches and combinations to the head.
Asenjo never stopped trying, but her punch output dropped with each passing round. Fundora was always on the offensive but was not able to hurt or drop Asenjo late in the fight.
“Undisputed is next for me,” said Fundora after the fight. “I want to break the record for (being) the youngest undisputed champion. I feel like a fight against Gabriela Alaniz would be such an action-packed fight, and good for me as well as good for Golden Boy.
“Asenjo was a good fighter. I got her with some hard shots, and she was able to last the 10 rounds with me.”
Saturday marked Fundora’s second successful defense of the IBF title. In her previous fight on January 27, Fundora stopped Christina Cruz in the 10th and final round.
The 22-year-old Fundora is the younger sister of WBC and WBO junior middleweight titleholder Sebastian Fundora. Both reside in Coachella, California and are managed by Sampson Lewkowicz.
Asenjo, who resides in Valdivia, Chile, falls to 16-4-3, 2 KOs. The 33-year-old was unbeaten in her previous seven bouts, including a minor world title belt.
In the opening bout of the DAZN stream, welterweight prospect Joel Iriarte stopped Miguel Ortiz in the first round, improving to 4-0, 4 KOs.
The taller Iriarte was on the attack from the opening bell, walking Ortiz down and landing at will. Iriarte threw and landed a straight hand that snapped back the head of Ortiz. Moments later, Iriarte connected with a left hook to the body, followed by a left hook to the head.
With about a minute left in the round, a barrage of punches sent Ortiz back against the ropes. As Ortiz attempted to defend himself, Iriarte landed at will, which prompted referee Michael Ortega to step in and stop the fight at 2:15.
Iriarte, who resides in Bakersfield, California, was an amateur standout and made his pro debut on March 16.
Ortiz, who resides in Springfield, Massachusetts, falls to 3-2, 1 KO.
