Abdullah Mason stops Mike Ohan Jr. in two rounds, Wilkens Mathieu remains unbeaten

QUEBEC CITY – One of boxing’s brightest prospects Abdullah Mason barely broke a sweat at Centre Videotron in Quebec City, taking out Mike Ohan Jr. in two rounds on the Christian Mbilli-Sergiy Derevyanchenko undercard.

The fight was halted at the 40 second mark.

Unknowingly, the lightweights rode to the weigh in together. Upon realizing that, the two embraced each other. Just over 24 hours later those smiles turned to punches.

Mason (15-0, 13 knockouts) showed unerring poise before finding a home for a perfectly placed left hook turned uppercut that dropped Ohan (19-3, 9 KOs) to the seat of his pants late in the first round. To his credit, he made his way to his feet and out of the round.

However, it wasn’t long until Ohan, whose father, Mike Sr. a former sparring partner of Marvin Hagler, was down again. A rapid fire combination left Ohan in a heap in the neutral corner. His corner wisely elected to call a halt and save their fighter for another day.

“I landed to the body, I could see he was a little surprised, after that I could see he wasn’t taking the initiative,” Mason said in a post-fight interview. “I touched him up with two punches and that’s what got him out of there. 

“Absolutely [I feel there has been progress.] I feel better every time.”

Junior lightweight Leila Beaudoin outboxed Lizbeth Crespo over 10-rounds to record the unanimous decision.

The Canadian was awarded the decision 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92.

Beaudoin (12-1, 1 KO) was stronger and controlled the center of the ring against Crespo (15-8, 4 KOs) ) in the early going. She pressed the action against the Bolivian born fighter, who lives and trains in Argentina. 

Crespo, who is a former South American champion at 126 and 135. Fell short in a world title shot against Jennifer Han for the IBF featherweight title in 2018. She also came up short against Mikaela Mayer (UD 10) and, most recently, Maira Moneo (L UD 10) for the WBC Interim lightweight title, was honest and kept coming as best she could. 

The two fiercely exchanged punches in Round 5 and 6 much to the appreciate of the crowd.

Crespo injected some pace into proceedings in Round 9, chasing and harrying Beaudoin, who later got back to boxing and staved off the visitors aggressive attack.

In the final round both decided to trade at ring center in a final effort to catch the eye of the judges. 

Popular local super middleweight Wilkens Mathieu scored a dominant 6-round unanimous decision over durable Facundo Galovar in a catchweight contest.

From the opening bell, Mathieu, still only 19, was too fast and athletic for Galovar and though he was hurt on a couple of occasions, Mathieu was unable to drop him and had to settle for a clean sweep on the scorecards 60-54 x3.

Mathieu (10-0, 6 KOs) used his stabbing jab to head and body to keep Galovar (15-12-2, 9 KOs) honest in the early going. The home fighter landed a big right hand that saw Galovar’s knee buckle late in the first round. 

Stopping the Argentine fighter was always going to be a tough ask, he’s only been stopped once previously. Mathieu’s speed was evident when he flashed combinations that drew loud cheers from the local crowd in Round 2.

In the third round a left hand from Mathieu sent spray off the Argentine spoilers head and later he had Galovar hurt and covering up. 

Over the next couple of rounds Mathieu showcased his abilities and though he was looking for the knockout it was never on. All in all it should be considered a good performance and a valuable learning curve.
