Wright, 54, has suffered a dreadful run of results and finished bottom of the Premier League for a second successive year.

He said: “I’ve won loads of titles. It’s not that I’ve got to win them, it’s that I want to win them just for myself.

“I ain’t got to prove a point to anybody. I will be winning majors this year. I’ll be nicking Luke Humphries’ pocket money!

“You doubt yourself when you are invited to these World Series and other players aren’t. You think they should be here and not me.

“It’s my job to get up there and show why I am here and try and win this title.

“The quality of darts all around the world is just getting better and better.

“I usually look at the draw to see who I’ve got next. But I don’t know this time.

“That stung me in the backside at the Matchplay. I looked too far ahead to see how I’d win it. Now I just look at the player who is in front of me.”

He continued: “My target now is just to win titles and this old guy to upset all the youngsters!

“I can win games again which makes me a pretty dangerous wildcard in any tournament now.”
