Woman Struck By Bullet At White Sox Game Sues Team
A woman who was struck by a bullet while sitting in the left field bleachers at Guaranteed Rate Field last season has filed a lawsuit against the White Sox.
The incident occurred on August 25, 2023. According to the Chicago Police Department, a 42-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to her leg, while another 26-year-old woman had a graze wound on her abdomen. The 42-year-old woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center while the 26-year-old refused medical attention.
Nearly one year later one of the women, who is only referred to as “Jane Doe” in a lawsuit filed by John J. Malm and Associates, is accusing the White Sox of “negligence and recklessness” for not enforcing its no-weapon policy after a gun was allegedly snuck into the park. Malm is a Naperville attorney who specializes in personal injury litigation.
The woman is seeking $50,000 for personal injuries, pecuniary losses, and other damages. The lawsuit also names At Your Service LLC, which provides staff for the ballpark, and the Illinois Sports Authority, which owns Guaranteed Rate Field.
Sources previously told Sports Mockery that one of the women had allegedly set off the metal detector three separate times when attempting to enter the stadium. Both sources claimed that the woman was allegedly trying to sneak a gun past the metal detectors by hiding the weapon inside her bell fat and was eventually let through. One of the sources speculated that security did not want to overstep their boundaries.
Peggy Kusinski later confirmed the report on ESPN 1000.
At the time a source familiar with the investigation also told Sports Mockery that a third person took the gun and fled the stadium before either woman received medical attention. The Chicago Police Department has not confirmed these reports, and an ongoing investigation is ongoing. The lawsuit denies rumors that the woman accidentally shot herself after sneaking the gun into the stadium.
