Everton release blunt 72-word statement confirming Neal Maupay’s transfer exit after striker ‘compared club to a PRISON’

EVERTON released a blunt statement confirming Neal Maupay’s exit after the striker compared the Premier League club to a prison.

Ex-Brentford forward Maupay, 28, has joined Marseille on loan with an obligation to buy for £3million next summer.

On Thursday, before his transfer had been sealed, Maupay uploaded a clip from the famous film “The Shawshank Redemption” showing lead character Andy Dufresne escaping prison and celebrating wildly.

The post is in keeping with the villainous persona the Frenchman has become known for.

And Everton appeared less than impressed with his behaviour as they released a statement on Friday.

The Toffees said: “Neal Maupay has left Everton to join Olympique de Marseille on loan for 2024/25, with the French club having an obligation to buy the forward at the end of the season.

“Maupay moves to the Ligue 1 side after spending the 2023/24 campaign on loan with one of his former clubs Brentford.

“The 28-year-old Frenchman joined Everton in August 2022, making 32 appearances for the Blues and scoring one goal.”

After joining in 2022, Maupay scored just one goal in 29 appearances during his first campaign at Goodison Park.

Last season, he re-joined Brentford on loan and netted eight times in 31 games.

He becomes the latest Premier League player to move to Roberto De Zerbi‘s Marseille following Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

But he is better-known for winding up fellow pros than his performances on the pitch.

In January, he clashed with Tottenham’s James Maddison after trolling the playmaker’s darts celebration.

The following month he was involved in a heated feud with Kyle Walker.

And in July, Maupay trolled the England team just moments after their heartbreaking Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
