Canelo vs. Berlanga weigh-in results: Canelo Alvarez set for super middleweight title defense

Canelo Alvarez is locked in for another championship fight.

At Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins for Canelo’s upcoming bout against Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas, the reigning WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight champion was announced at at 166.75 pounds. Berlanga also successfully made weight, tipping the scales at 167.5 pounds.

This marks Canelo’s eighth consecutive super middleweight title bout, a run that was only interrupted by a light heavyweight championship fight against Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. Bivol defeated by unanimous decision, the Mexican star’s only loss in his past 21 fights. Most recently, Canelo defeated Jaime Munguia to retain his belts and improve his pro record to 61-2-2.

Berlanga enters the contest carrying an undefeated record, with 22 wins and 17 knockouts to his name.

With the fight going down on Mexican Independence Day weekend, the fighters’ respective nationalities has become a much-discussed part of the narrative. Berlanga proudly represents his Puerto Rican heritage and spoke about the rivalry in his post-weigh-in interview.

“Shit, it’s a war tomorrow,” Berlanga said. “Puerto Rico vs. Mexico. ... I love all this right here. It’s all fuel for me. I belong here, you hear me? I belong here.”

“Knockout,” Berlanga later added when asked for a result prediction. “And then the rematch, we’re bringing it to New York. Puerto Rican Day weekend.”

Canelo, a massive favorite hovering around -2000 on some sportsbooks, was unfazed by Berlanga’s talk.

“Look, I don’t have much to say about Berlanga anymore,” Alvarez said via a Spanish translator. “What I can tell you is he’s about to face someone that’s very, very different than what he’s accustomed to.”

“It’s very easy to say, but he’s going to find out Saturday night,” Alvarez said of Berlanga’s knockout prediction. “It’s going to be something different.”

Canelo vs. Berlanga takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday.
