ILLINOIS (3.40 Doncaster, nap)

He looks to be crying out for a return to this St Leger trip after a good run in the Great Voltigeur at York last time. His best run of the season came when winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot over this distance and he’s a stayer with more to come.

KINROSS (3.00 Doncaster, nb)

He won this race two years ago and comes here off a decent third at Goodwood last time where he gave the winner too much of a lead. He will be fine on this ground and looks hard to beat.

GREY FABLE (5.15 Chester, treble)

This Irish raider has become a Chester specialist with a close second followed by two convincing victories. He can cope with a 5lb rise for his most recent success and looks the one to beat again.

Templegate’s TV verdicts

WOLF OF BADENOCH was a good winner over course and distance on debut in June and then ran a cracker when second in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

That was all the better as he was very green behind a hot prospect and there should be a lot more to come.

Aidan O’Brien has two interesting runners. Aftermath is a son of supersire Justify and he did well to finish second on debut at Newbury when racing away from the main pace.

He should take a real step up from that despite being pitched into much stronger company.

Ballydoyle also send over Monumental who got his act together to score at Gowran Park 11 days ago. He has improved for the application of blinkers and is another with a lot more to come.

Righthere Rightnow created a good impression when going from the front to score by five lengths on debut at Newmarket. He will build on that and can’t be ruled out.

Chancellor was third in an Ascot Listed race either side of victories in lesser company here.

He had plenty in hand when winning last time and the Gosdens won this a few years ago with Too Darn Hot.

Bay City Roller has won his two races narrowly and is another in with a hunt in a wide open race.

COVER UP has been knocking on the door in the hottest handicaps and can land a deserved win.

He was an excellent fifth in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood before going down by just over a length at York last time.

He may not quite last out six furlongs so this slightly shorter trip is ideal as is the flatter track. He’s off the same mark as that good Knavesmire victory and he can score for John Gosden.

The line came a few strides too soon for Albasheer in the Beverley Bullet 14 days ago. He ran well in a couple of tough handicaps at Ascot earlier this season and has solid place claims.

JM Jungle got his head in front against 21 rivals at York last month and will be competitive again from 4lb higher in the weights. He finished ahead of Shagraan there who ran a nice race in fifth.

Mick Appleby’s flyer has gone on to score in good company at Haydock and will be competitive again.

American Affair rarely finishes out of the first three and was right there again behind Shagraan last week. He was racing away from the pace there and it would be no shock to see him turn that form around.

Bergerac was first home in his group when sixth overall behind JM Jungle last time. He’s had a little nudge down the weights which makes him competitive again.

Apollo One hasn’t won for a while but is another coming here off a good run at York with an each-way chance.

KINROSS may be nearing the veteran stage but he was far from disgraced over this trip at Goodwood last time.

Rossa Ryan had him too far off the leaders and time ran out before he could catch up. He won this race two years ago and is fine with some cut in the ground.

Lead Artist drops back in distance after a Group 3 success but he doesn’t look short of pace. His best has come on quicker ground but it’s still early days so there should be more to come.

Poet Master has won two of his past three including the competitive Minstrel Stakes over this distance at The Curragh latest.

He has to give weight away but has winning form over this trip and track so warrants respect.

Al Shabab Storm has risen nicely through the ranks and took a German Group 3 last time.

He is possibly better over six furlongs but he’ll like the ground and last year’s winning trainer Andrew Balding continues in excellent form.

The others have a mountain to climb. Shoulvebeenaring ran well at York two runs ago in a Group 2 over this trip and scored in Deauville earlier this summer.

He is probably best over a furlong shorter but looks the pick of the bigger prices for Richard Hannon.

3.40 ST LEGER PINSTICKERS’ GUIDE

ILLINOIS can leave the bookies in a state by winning the Betfred St Leger (3.40 Doncaster).

He has already proven his staying power by winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and was staying on strongly in the Great Voltigeur at York latest.

Unbeaten Ballydoyle stablemate Jan Breughel looks the biggest threat but Irish Oaks winner You Got To Me is another to watch over a trip that should suit.

CHESTER

LA YAKEL has always looked better than a handicapper and can prove it here.

He had plenty left when winning over this trip in the mud at Hamilton last time. He gets his ideal conditions again and looks hard to beat.

Al Qareem won this 12 months ago from the front and will try to pull off the same tactics. He loves it soft but hasn’t looked quite the same this season.

Burdett Road is a high-class hurdler so won’t lack for stamina. The ground was too quick for him at York last time and he’ll be happier in these conditions.

Iron Lion needs to bounce back from a poor run but was in winning form at Ripon two starts ago and David O’Meara is in good nick.

2.40

ZOFFEE won the Chester Cup in May and must have a big chance from only 2lb higher in the weights.

He handles slow ground and has had a relatively light season. He’s better than he showed at York last time.

Spirit Mixer enjoyed himself when winning here two Saturdays ago. He’ll be competitive again from 4lb higher but has much slower ground to contend with.

Vera Verto ran well at Newmarket two starts ago before another solid effort at Killarney latest. He comes off the bridle early but boxes on and can run into the frame as others tire.

Sheradann has Chester king Franny Norton on board and has shown his best in testing conditions. He has had a nudge down the weights after a modest show at Ascot.

Chester Cup second Emiyn showed up well at Haydock last time and is shortlisted for this tricky puzzle.
