Everton vs Newcastle preview

An intriguing battle awaits at Goodison Park as Everton and Newcastle clash in the Premier League under the lights on Saturday.

The Toffees finally clinched their first victory of the 2024-25 season when coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace last weekend.

Dwight McNeil grabbed two second-half goals to give Everton a much-needed boost and move them up to 16th position.

Sean Dyche’s side are now unbeaten in their last two, and crucially have defensive duo Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitalii Mykolenko back from injury.

The Toffees are still towards the bottom of the table in terms of xG, but they actually boast the lowest xGC (expected goals conceded) of any side over the last two matches (1.61).

Everton have also lost just three of their last 20 Premier League home games against Newcastle.

It’s been an interesting start to the season for Newcastle, whose 11 points from six matches is their most at this stage of a top-flight season since 2011-12.

But many would agree that they’ve not really hit the heights yet. They’ve netted eight goals this term, while only Leicester, Ipswich, Brentford and Wolves have registered less efforts on goal.

However, only Aston Villa and Manchester City have picked up more points from losing positions in the Premier League this season than Newcastle (5) and that could be useful against an Everton side who’ve blown there leads in their last four outings.

Everton vs Newcastle preview betting tips and predictions

Under 2.5

This match isn’t exactly screaming goals in my opinion.

Newcastle’s attack, though scoring in every competitive game this season, haven’t managed more than 1+ goal in their last three – and two of those were penalties.

And aside from that bumper 4-1 win back in April 2023 – Newcastle haven’t score more than once against the Toffees in their last five meetings.

Everton’s xG from open play is the lowest of any side in the division other than Leicester and Ipswich Town, while the return of Branthwaite and Mykolenko has seen them tighten things up at the back.

Dwight

If Everton are to score, it’s more than likely that Dwight McNeil will be involved in some capacity. The 24-year-old is now playing in the Number 10 role, and he’s beginning to flourish having already matched his goal tally for last season.

He’s created a whopping 21 chances for his colleagues this season – which is triple the number of any Everton player. In fact, he’s leading the likes of James Maddison, Bukayo Saka, Kevin De Bruyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold in expected assists. His set-piece delivery is also clearly a weapon for Everton.
