Bill Belichick said that Davante Adams is not worth trading a second-round pick, proving irony is dead

Since retiring from coaching this past offseason, Bill Belichick has been a regular among NFL media. It was an expected move. He’s arguably the best NFL head coach of all-time, so it makes sense that outlets want to hear his commentary. But he’s really been ignoring his own coaching history as of late.

That was clear this week as he discussed the Davante Adams trade saga with the Raiders.

Belichick said that he didn’t think any team would trade a second-round pick for Adams despite Adams coming off his fourth straight thousand-yard season. And sure, a second-round pick might be too high of an asking price for Adams given his contract situation, but it was certainly ironic to hear Belichick say that.

"I don't see how anybody's going to give up a 2nd round pick for him."

Back in 2019, Belichick and the Patriots traded a second-round pick for then-Falcons receiver Mohamed Sanu. The traded ended up being such a bust for New England that Sanu was gone the following season. And even at Sanu’s best, he was a versatile secondary option at receiver but never a foundational piece. Belichick was willing to give up a second-round pick for that but wouldn’t for Adams.

Irony must be dead.
