Joe Root’s amazing life, from meeting wife Carrie at a Headingley bar to driving a £180k Range Rover and a love of golf
JOE Root has made history for England’s cricket team – overtaking Alastair Cook as his country’s highest ever Test run scorer.
He got there with a brilliant innings against Pakistan in the first Test – eventually scoring 262 before he was caught lbw by Salman Agha.
The 33-year-old, who trails second-placed Ricky Ponting by just 1,000 runs, now has Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 runs in his sights.
Thanks to his brilliance with the bat, Root has earned a fortune from the game.
It is estimated the Yorkshireman has a net worth of £8million.
That wealth contributes towards a stunning lifestyle for Root and wife, Carrie who he met in a bar in Headingley.
The former England cricket captain has also splashed the cash on a stunning car collection.
While his favourite pastimes include cheering his beloved Sheffield United and playing golf.
The missus
Root met Carrie at popular Headingley bar, The Arc through mutual friends.
She worked as a bar manager, when their paths crossed.
In 2014, the blonde Yorkshire lass and Root went public with their romance on social media.
Two years later, they shared the happy news of an engagement, as their love continued to blossom.
On December 1, 2018 they said their ‘I do’s’ in front of friends and family at a traditional wedding ceremony in Sheffield.
They have two children together, including son Alfred (born in 2017) and daughter Isabella (born 2020).
Root has previously spoken about the difficulties of juggling family life as a cricketer, often spending time apart when he goes on Tests abroad.
However, Carrie is often seen cheering him on from the stands alongside the Barmy Army, as one of the game’s most supportive Wags.

Thanks to a salary estimated at around £1.4million-per-year, Root is able to splash the cash on a luxury lifestyle.
He is believed to live in a stunning Yorkshire home with his family.
But it’s his epic garage that really has us purring.
Over the years, Root has been seen behind the wheel of some special motors.
One of those includes a Range Rover Sport SV worth a staggering £180,000.
Powered by a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine, it’s a favourite of Premier League footballers around the country.
And it’s no slouch, able to do 0-60mph in around four seconds.
Root also had a BMW X5 that starts at around £70,000.
One of the most reliable SUV’s on the market, it can reach 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.
Finally, at one time he was spotted with a Mercedes-Benz GLE Class Coupe, that have a starting price today of £78,000 for the newest model.
All in all, he’s driven cars worth around the £330,000 mark.
Football mad
In his downtime, Root is a mad Sheffield United fan.
Back in September, he took his son to see the Blades in action at Bramall Lane.
Root shared the moment in the stands on Instagram, captioning a photo: “‘Boys day out at lan today! So much fun!”
According to reports, his support for United puts him at odds with Leeds United-supporting Jonny Bairstow, and the pair often rib each other about their teams.
While Nottingham Forest fan Stuart Broad revealed a tense moment between him and Root when they watched their teams play against each other in the 2022 play-off semi-final together.
“Just after half-time, 46th minute, conceding, and (Joe Root) punched me in the leg because I told him ‘you’re not celebrating sat next to me’,” Broad told Sky Sports after the game.
“He punched me in the leg with celebration when it went in.”
Golf days out
Root also loves unwinding with a round of golf.
He is a regular at the Alfred Dunhill pro-am tournament, alongside ex-cricketers Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen, as well as Sun columnist Piers Morgan.
He told RSNG: “I haven’t really been playing golf for a huge amount of time, to be honest, but there are clearly similarities.
“It wasn’t until I was in my late teens that I picked up a golf club properly and started playing regularly.
“Since then I haven’t looked back and now I am on the golf course or the driving range as much as I possibly can.
“With it being a slightly similar game in the way that it’s hand-eye coordination works, it’s actually a very useful way of keeping that motion going away from cricket.”
