5 free agents the Lions can sign to withstand their barrage of injuries

The Detroit Lions entered the month of December as the best team in football, but injuries have besieged the NFC’s biggest Super Bowl contender.

Just on Sunday, the team reportedly lost defensive tackle Alim McNeill for the year to an ACL tear and cornerback Carlton Davis for six weeks with a broken jaw. Running back David Montgomery might be lost for the year with a reportedly torn MCL, and cornerback Khalil Dorsey reportedly fractured his leg.

These injured Lions will join the likes of Detroit players on injured reserve like defensive ends Aidan Hutchinson, John Cominsky and Marcus Davenport, linebackers Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Alex Anzalone, Malcolm Rodriguez and Derrick Barnes, wide receiver Kalif Raymond, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr., defensive tackles Mekhi Wingo and Kyle Peko and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, among others.

The snakebit Lions are going to have to consider outside help to buffet some of these losses with a Super Bowl still plainly in sight. Here are five guys who should be able to help right away.
