Inter vs Liverpool – Ince says ‘battle will be won in midfield’
Paul Ince knows better than most what it means when Inter meet Liverpool.
The former England midfielder, who spent two seasons in Milan before joining the Reds, admits the fixture “tests his emotions” even now.
Speaking ahead of the Champions League showdown, the ex-Inter “Governatore” underlined the unique connection he still feels with both clubs and why this edition of the match-up will come down to control of the midfield.
“It’s a very special game, it really pushes my emotions,” Ince said to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Not many players can say they’ve played for both Liverpool and Inter, two giant clubs. I’m lucky I did. When people ask who I support, I always say I hope nobody wins, a draw would be perfect.”
Inter vs Liverpool – Ince believes midfield battle is key
Ince believes Cristian Chivu’s side approach the tie in the right moment, but warned against assuming Liverpool’s recent chaos makes them harmless. “The reaction after the derby defeat was immediate,” he said. “The team is ready to explode. But don’t think Liverpool are easy just because of the mess they’re in.”
The retired midfielder was particularly candid about the Premier League side’s structural issues. “Liverpool are a strange team, they can score loads and concede loads,” he explained. “There’s no settled formation. One week a player starts, the next he’s on the bench or out of position. That creates confusion. Inter will definitely have chances, but they have to take them.”
Ultimately, Ince expects the match to hinge on the midfield. “The battle will be won there,” he insisted. “Inter have Calhanoglu for control and Barella with passion and quality. Liverpool have great midfielders too. But whoever takes hold of the middle of the pitch will win the game.”
