RAF 06 Preview: Elite Matchups Set To Headline Anticipated Event
Nick Fratto
With RAF 06 just over a month away, anticipation continues to grow as the announced card shapes up to be one of the most talent-rich wrestling showcases of the year, featuring Olympic medalists, world champions, NCAA stars, MMA stars and rising prospects.
The main event pits Urijah Faber against Henry Cejudo in a clash of eras and styles. Faber, a former UC Davis wrestler who relied heavily on wrestling throughout his UFC career, faces Cejudo, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, whose elite freestyle pedigree represents the pinnacle of the sport.
At 145 pounds, UFC standout Muhammad Mokaev takes on pure wrestling standout Bryce Meredith. While Meredith brings an impressive résumé as a two-time NCAA finalist and three-time All-American, who transitioned to the MMA scene. Mokaev has built a reputation for rarely being out-wrestled, even by the most accomplished grapplers.
Another featured bout sees Magomedkhabib Kadimagomedov face former belt holder Evan Wick. Wick looks to reclaim his position at the top, while Kadimagomedov enters the bout motivated after a controversial loss to Kyle Dake, adding another chapter to the long-standing Dagestani-versus-American wrestling narrative.
In the middleweight division, fans will be treated to a scramble-heavy showdown between Frank Chamizo and Keegan O’Toole. Chamizo, a two-time World Champion and Olympic bronze medalist, is widely regarded as one of the most athletic and creative wrestlers in the world, whereas O’Toole brings two NCAA titles and U20/U23 world gold medals, making this one of the most technically intriguing matches on the card.
The RAF strawweight division, features a highly touted high school phenom Everest Leydecker who will take on one of the toughest opponents of her young career in Lucía Yépez Guzmán, an Olympic silver medalist and true icon of women’s wrestling. With elite credentials on both sides, the stakes are high, as the winner of this bout will likely earn a title matchup against reigning champion Sarah Hildebrandt.
