Sagna claims Italy defender Calafiori is ‘the best recruit Arsenal have had in a long time’

Bacary Sagna believes Riccardo Calafiori has quietly become one of Arsenal’s most important signings in recent seasons, praising the Italian defender’s consistency, versatility and mentality as key assets in a side chasing major honours.

In an interview with The Italian Football Podcast, the former Gunners full-back revealed that he followed Calafiori closely during his rise in Serie A and says his performances in Italy already hinted at the level he is now showing in the Premier League.

“I used to work for Serie A last year, so I used to follow Calafiori at Bologna. He was brilliant,” Sagna explained, pointing to a defender who combined composure in possession with aggression out of it.

That blend has translated smoothly to English football, where Arsenal rely heavily on defenders who can both build play and handle intense one-v-one duels.

Sagna highlighted how Calafiori’s reliability stands out in a squad filled with attacking flair. “I think he’s very efficient, he’s reliable. He’s good on the ball. He’s not scared to play out from the back, he’s good in challenges, he’s quite athletic, so he wins most of the duels.”

For a team that dominates possession, having defenders comfortable stepping into midfield and progressing the ball is crucial.

He also grouped Calafiori with another key defensive addition.

“I think he’s probably with Timber the best recruit Arsenal have had for a long time, because they are reliable, and they can play many positions.”

That versatility gives Mikel Arteta greater tactical freedom across a demanding schedule.

Sagna stressed that title races are often decided by players who deliver steady performances rather than spectacular moments.

“If you want to be champions… these are the type of players that can make you win the league.” In his eyes, Calafiori fits that profile perfectly, concluding: “He’s a top player, is Calafiori.”
