Hovhannisyan Stops Navarro In Five

By David Finger

For an undefeated fighter with 8 KOs in 9 fights, Armenian Gurgen “Big Gug” Hovhannisyan, 281.4, didn’t look like much of a power puncher early on against Cesar Navarro, 210.2. Content to jab and use his long reach to keep the Phoenix native at the end of his punches, “Big Gug” looked more like a tactician than a heavy hitter. But after four rounds of clubbing jabs, the Armenian was clearly ready to show boxing fans in Las Vegas just how heavy his hands were. Navarro, who had no answer to the size advantage of “Big Gug” in the first four rounds, found himself on the receiving end of a series of heavy combinations that he simply had no answer for. After a solid combination sent him reeling into the corner in round five, Navarro failed to throw any punches in return as Hovhannisyan unloaded on him, giving Referee Robert Hoyle little choice but to wave it off at 2:45. Interestingly enough, one judge had the fight even after four rounds. “Big Gug” now sees his record stand at 10-0, 9 KOs while Navarro slips to 15-4, 13 KOs.
